American, Wells Fargo & Company
New Mexico
Circa 1900
Painted metal
21 x 21 inches (53 x 53 cm)
Private collection, Las Vegas, New Mexico
The square sign carries the Wells Fargo & Co Express name in cream lettering across a dark blue disc, set within a red diamond on a cream ground. The design is the company's standard express office pattern of the period, lettered in three lines with the ampersand centered on the disc. The surface shows heavy chipping and losses to the paint throughout, exposing the darkened metal beneath, with wear concentrated at the edges and across the upper field.
The sign is said to come from the company's Silver City, New Mexico office. Wells Fargo & Company ran express and banking services across the West from 1852, and its express offices operated in New Mexico mining towns including Silver City into the early twentieth century. Signs of this pattern marked the company's agency offices.
