Painted wood with metal fittings
32 inches long (81 cm)
Ron Munn, New Mexico
The violin case is painted overall in black and decorated across the lid with a western stagecoach scene, the coach at speed behind a team of horses with a driver and guard up top and mounted riders alongside among low trees. Further painted scenes run along the sides of the case, the colors worked directly onto the wood in a folk hand. The paint shows scattered wear, chipping, and rubbing to the edges consistent with age and use, and the metal latches are present.
A period violin, unmarked, is included with the case. Painted cases of this kind are cowboy folk art, decorated by their owners or by local hands rather than workshop makers, and survive with their instruments far less often than alone. The pairing is offered together as found.
