The trade knife has a broad single edged blade below a rounded wood grip secured with metal pins, the blade struck with the maker's stamp and a pipe device. The steel is stained and pitted grey overall with the edge intact, and the scales are sound with wear to the high spots of the grain. The knife sits in the heavy working proportions of the trade pattern.
Knives of this kind were produced by English cutlers for export to North America, where they served as working and trade goods across the frontier through the middle of the nineteenth century. Pictorial devices such as the pipe were struck on blades destined for that market, where marks could carry recognition that lettering could not. The maker's stamp reads Williams and Smith of London, as acquired.
