W.J. Senda, Panorama of Nawiliwili Bay, Kauai

$700.00

Hawaii, United States

1920s

Photograph, original frame

Height: 9 in (22.9 cm), Width: 27 in (68.6 cm), including original frame

Provenance: Found in abandoned storage locker, Honolulu, Hawaii

William Jonokichi Senda (1889–1984) was a Japanese American photographer based in Hawaii whose long career spanned the territorial and early statehood periods, producing documentary and commercial photography across the islands. Nawiliwili Bay on the south coast of Kauai was one of the principal harbors of the island, and panoramic photographs of the bay and its surrounding landscape are among the more historically significant documents of Kauai's early twentieth century waterfront. The discovery of this photograph in an abandoned Honolulu storage locker gives it an unusual provenance that speaks to the way Hawaiian photographic material has circulated outside conventional collecting channels.

This panoramic photograph by Senda captures Nawiliwili Bay in the characteristic sepia tones of 1920s Hawaiian photography, with the wide horizontal format conveying the sweep of the bay and its surroundings. The original frame is intact, and the image is in collectible condition consistent with storage rather than display.
