Woodlands, northeastern North America
19th century
Birch bark
Length 9 1/2" (24.1 cm)
Provenance: London Trade
Birch bark moccasins of this type were produced by Woodlands communities as trade objects for the European market, particularly during the nineteenth century when curiosity items and Native made goods circulated widely through London trade channels. The construction is entirely of birch bark, folded, stitched, and shaped to follow the form of a moccasin, with the natural texture and color of the bark providing the primary visual character. Objects of this kind occupy an interesting position between functional form and tourist or trade production.
