Yaure — Côte d'Ivoire
Mid-20th century or earlier
Wood and pigment
Height: 14¾ in (37.5 cm); Width: 8 in (20.3 cm)
Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, CA, before 1960
This mask is carved with a smooth oval face, lowered eyes, projecting side elements, and an elaborate crested coiffure with finely incised hair patterns framing the upper portion. The surface carries a fine dark glossy patina consistent with age and ceremonial use.
The Yaure are a subgroup of the Akan peoples of Côte d'Ivoire, and masks of this type were used in funeral ceremonies and other rites directed toward reconciling the Yu spirits. These performances were restricted — unseen by women and not to be photographed — marking the mask as an object of serious ritual authority. The piece was in the collection of Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, before 1960.
