Wood, metal, beads, pigment, offering remains
Height 12"
Provenance: Plocki Collection, London; Christie's, Amsterdam, December 10, 2003
This standing female ibeji figure rises on a stepped oval base with toes clearly articulated, arms held slightly away from the body with hands resting at the hips. The face is carved with downcast eyes, a small mouth, and scarification marks rendered as incised lines on the cheeks and forehead, and the elongated neck supports a rounded oval head surmounted by a tall, finely ridged crested coiffure. A beaded and metal waist ornament encircles the figure at the hips, and the surface retains traces of applied pigment and offering material consistent with active ceremonial use.
