A water jar with a rounded body rising to a high shoulder and a short concave neck, the rim and interior slipped red. The upper zone is slipped cream and painted in black and red with pennant shaped devices, narrow framing lines, and red forms edged with rows of dots. The lower zone carries panels of red blossoms on black stems with black leaf sprays, bounded below by the unslipped red brown underbody.
The paint is applied with a yucca brush over a polished slip, and the drawing shifts slightly from panel to panel in the way of work laid out freehand around a curved surface. Jars of this size were made at Zia for carrying and storing water, and this one was used at the pueblo rather than made for the trade. The red slip of the underbody carries up to a black framing line that separates it from the painted zone above.
