Zuni
Southwest
1970s
Sterling silver, mother of pearl, turquoise, and shell
Height 2 1/4 inches (5.7 cm), width 2 1/2 inches (6.4 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Denver, Colorado
The slide is worked as a covered wagon in mosaic inlay, its canvas top built from five panels of mother of pearl cut to follow the curve of the bows and separated by fine silver channels. The wagon body below carries a band of turquoise set with stepped and diamond forms in orange shell, a pattern that reads as both a geometric border and the boarding of the wagon side. Two wheels turn on the silver frame with turquoise centres and radiating spokes, and the whole slide is mounted on a braided leather cord with silver tips.
