Zuni Covered Wagon Bolo Tie with Turning Wheels

$1,400.00

Zuni

Southwest

1970s

Sterling silver, mother of pearl, turquoise, and agate

Height 2 5/8 inches (6.7 cm), width 3 inches (7.6 cm)

Signed H.L.

Provenance: Private collection, Mesa, Arizona

The canvas top is built from tall panels of mother of pearl chosen for their iridescence, so the cover shifts through pink, green, and gold as the piece moves, each panel divided by a fine silver line and shaped to the swell of the bows. Below it the wagon body is a turquoise ground set with red diamonds and half diamonds and closed at the ends by angled uprights, and the four wheels are rimmed in red, spoked in silver, and centred with small turquoise studs. The wheels are made to turn on their axles rather than being fixed to the plate, which is unusual on an inlay slide of this size, and the bolo hangs on a braided black leather cord with plain tapered silver tips.
