Sterling silver with turquoise, coral, jet and mother of pearl, signed
Total circumference 8 1/4 in (21 cm), gap 1 5/8 in (4.1 cm), width [pending]; 53.81 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Gallup, NM
This Zuni cuff is worked in fine channel and mosaic inlay, with cut stones set flush between thin sterling bars. The design combines geometric panels with a feather motif in turquoise, coral, jet and mother of pearl, set against the silver. A stamped, twisted rope style border frames the inlay along the top and bottom edges.
The inlay is precisely cut and fitted, each stone shaped to sit level with its neighbors in the Zuni lapidary tradition. At just under 54 grams the cuff has solid weight while remaining comfortable to wear. It is signed by the maker and dates to 2010.
Don Dewa is an award winning Zuni inlay artist who has worked since the 1970s, known for precise channel and mosaic inlay in the Zuni tradition. He is best known for his original spinner bracelets and pendants, which feature a rotating sunface inlaid differently on each side. He works stones such as turquoise, coral, jet and mother of pearl set between sterling bars, and at times collaborates with his wife, Velma Dewa.
