Zuni Inlay Covered Wagon Pin with Shell Canopy

$200.00

Zuni, New Mexico

1990s

Sterling silver, turquoise, shell, black jade

Height 1 1/4 inches (3.2 cm), Width 1 5/8 inches (4.1 cm)

11.97 grams

Provenance: Private collection, Las Cruces, New Mexico

The pin depicts a covered wagon rendered in channel inlay, with the canopy built from alternating panels of white shell and black jade set into individual silver bezels that fan outward across the top of the composition. Beneath the canopy the wagon body is worked in turquoise and red inlay laid in angled segments, and the wheels are formed from silver wire with soldered spokes that stand slightly proud of the surface. Zuni inlay of this type depends on precise stonecutting, since each piece must be shaped to fit its silver cell without visible gaps, and the pin is finished on the reverse with a hinged pin stem and catch.
