Photogravure on vellum paper, period frame
Framed: 14 × 15" | Image: 5 1/2 × 7 1/2"
Provenance: Private collection, Tucson, Arizona
Note: Original photogravure plate from Volume 17 of The North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis. Of the 500 sets originally planned, approximately 300 were completed. Each set comprises 20 volumes.
This photogravure by Edward S. Curtis is titled A Zuni Man and was printed on vellum paper from Volume 17 of The North American Indian (1907–1930). Curtis dedicated over two decades to the project, producing more than 40,000 photographs of some 80 tribal nations. Volume 17 focuses on the Zuni and other Pueblo peoples of the Southwest, and individual volumes and their accompanying plates are collectible in their own right.
The image is presented in a period frame and represents a strong, well-preserved example of Curtis's work in photogravure, the primary medium through which his images were disseminated during his lifetime. Vellum paper gives the print a warm, distinctive surface quality. The print is in collector condition with private Tucson provenance.
