Sterling silver and natural turquoise

Necklace length 28 in / 71 cm, drop 3 in / 7.6 cm
Earrings 1 5/8 in / 4.1 cm
Ring size 9
148.77 grams

Provenance: Private collection, Rio Rancho, New Mexico

This Zuni set pairs a squash blossom necklace with matching earrings and a ring, all worked in needlepoint with slender pointed turquoise stones set as radiating rosettes. Each station on the necklace is a starburst of individually cut stones, leading to a large rosette naja at the center front. The clip earrings and the ring repeat the same needlepoint rosette, tying the three pieces together.

Needlepoint is a Zuni specialty in which each stone is cut to a thin pointed shape and set in close formation, a technique demanding precise lapidary work. The dense rosettes across the set carry dozens of matched stones, the color and cut of the turquoise carrying the pieces rather than heavy silver. The set was acquired in 1973, and at 148 grams for the necklace it is a full, wearable suite made for ceremony and display.
