Zuni Painted Stone Fetish in Stitched Leather
Zuni
New Mexico, Southwest
undated
Painted stone wrapped in stitched hide
6.25 in high
This Zuni fetish is a tapering stone whose upper end is left exposed and worked to a point, the exposed face carrying a patch of green pigment. The lower body is wrapped in hide that has been drawn together and stitched down the front in a raised seam, the leather darkened and worn with age. The piece stands on a fitted metal post and dark wooden base. It measures 6.25 inches high.
Zuni fetishes are carved and assembled stones kept for their power and their association with animals and spirits, and bound offerings of this kind were wrapped and tied as part of their care. This example pairs a painted stone with a stitched hide covering rather than the polished animal carvings often seen. It comes from the collection of Larry Frank, the Taos author and collector of Southwestern material.
