Zuni, New Mexico
1930s
Sterling silver, natural turquoise
Size 7
4.75 grams
Provenance: Larry Frank, Taos, New Mexico
The ring carries a large oval cluster of teardrop cut turquoise stones in blue and green tones, each set in its own plain bezel and arranged in mirrored rows around a central twisted wire spine. Silver drops are placed between the outer settings to fill the spaces and frame the cluster, and the shank widens sharply to carry the full width of the face. Cluster work of this kind was a hallmark of Zuni silversmiths in the early twentieth century, when close set petit point and cluster settings became the defining Zuni approach to turquoise.
