Zuni
American Southwest
1960
Sterling silver and natural turquoise
Length 24 in / 61 cm
Drop 1 3/4 in / 4.4 cm
80.62 grams
Provenance: Santa Fe trade
This Zuni necklace is worked in petit point, each station built from many small turquoise stones set as a radiating rosette around a center. The lapidary work carries the piece, with dozens of individually cut and hand set stones forming each blossom along the strand. At the center front a larger rosette frames a small silver naja, repeating the same clustered petit point setting.
Petit point is a Zuni specialty, marked by precise stone cutting rather than the heavy silver of Navajo work. The setting uses small uniform turquoise across every station, a labor intensive technique that Zuni lapidaries brought to a high level in the twentieth century. At 24 inches and just over 80 grams, the necklace is light on the neck, its weight in the stonework rather than the silver.
