Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico
Circa 1880
Pottery, mineral pigments
Height 10 1/4 in. (26 cm); diameter 14 in. (35.6 cm)
Provenance: Senator Diane Feinstein, San Francisco, California
Zuni polychrome pottery of the late 19th century is characterized by bold all-over geometric decoration combining black and red-orange elements on a white slip ground, with compositions that fill the vessel surface in dense, interlocking arrangements. This olla is decorated with large stepped and triangular geometric figures radiating across the body, organized in a symmetrical composition that reflects the structured decorative vocabulary of Zuni work from this period. The provenance connection to Senator Diane Feinstein places the piece within a notable private collection with documented San Francisco origins.
The vessel form is a full-bodied storage olla with a broad shoulder and wide diameter relative to its height, proportions consistent with Zuni production of the 1880s. The surface shows evidence of use, with the warm patina and worn areas of decoration indicating a vessel that functioned within the community before entering private hands. At 10 1/4 inches tall and 14 inches in diameter the piece has substantial display presence.
