Zuni Pueblo
Southwest
Circa 1880s
Height 8⅞"; Diameter 10"
Provenance: Private Taos collection
The globular body is covered in a red slip and decorated in white, with at least two modeled frogs applied in relief to the shoulder, their bodies spotted with white dots and legs extended outward across the surface. A dotted serpentine form winds along the neck just below the rim, rendered in a continuous wavy line of white dots. The lower body is divided into a grid of geometric panels — squares filled with cross and X motifs, triangles, and diamonds — that encircle the vessel.
A starburst or floral form appears on the reverse shoulder, painted in white against the red ground. The rim shows dark fire-clouding from use, and the surface carries the texture of age throughout. The combination of modeled frog and snake imagery with geometric painted decoration on a single vessel is a distinctive feature of Zuni production from this period.
