Zuni
Southwest
1940s
Sterling silver and natural turquoise
Total circumference 8 1/4 in (21 cm), gap 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm), width 2 1/2 in (6.4 cm)
Provenance: Pierre Bovis, Las Vegas, NV
This Zuni cuff is built as a large oval cluster, with concentric rings of oval turquoise cabochons radiating from a central stone. Each cabochon sits in its own serrated bezel, the rings divided by twisted rope wire and edged with stamped silver buttons in the precise cluster style associated with Zuni work. The turquoise runs from green to blue with light matrix, closely matched across the many stones, mounted on a split triple band shank.
The rosette measures a full 2 1/2 inches across, making this a wide statement cuff that fills the back of the hand. The dense, evenly worked cluster shows the careful lapidary and setting for which Zuni silversmiths are known. The 8 1/4 inch circumference with a 1 1/4 inch gap suits a larger wrist and adjusts through the open back.
