Zuni
Southwest
1960s
Sterling silver and natural turquoise
Total circumference 7 3/4 in (19.7 cm), gap 1 1/8 in (2.9 cm), width 2 1/2 in (6.4 cm); 88.05 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Casas Grandes, AZ
This Zuni cuff is built as a large round cluster, with concentric rings of teardrop turquoise radiating from a central flower rosette. Each stone sits in its own fine serrated bezel, the rings divided by twisted rope wire in the precise cluster style for which Zuni silversmiths are known. The turquoise is a clear blue, closely matched across dozens of hand cut stones.
The rosette measures a full 2 1/2 inches across, making this a wide statement cuff that fills the back of the hand. At just over 88 grams it has real weight, the dense stonework raised above a split shank band. The evenly worked lapidary shows the careful stone cutting and setting that distinguishes Zuni cluster work.
