Three ceramic buttons from the Mao era, produced during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). Buttons of this type were worn by members of the Red Guard, the youth paramilitary movement mobilized by Chairman Mao Zedong to enforce revolutionary ideology and eliminate perceived bourgeois and counter-revolutionary elements from Chinese society. Ceramic examples are less frequently encountered than metal counterparts.
