Portrait titled Carlos Rigs, Papago Chief by Edward S. Curtis, printed in 1907 on Dutch Van Gelder paper — from the inaugural year of The North American Indian (1907–1930). The Papago, known today as the Tohono O'odham or "Desert People," are one of the oldest continuously inhabiting cultures of the Sonoran Desert of present-day southern Arizona and northern Mexico. A named portrait of a Papago chief from this first year of the project carries exceptional historical and ethnographic weight, capturing an individual of considerable standing within his community at a moment of profound change in the indigenous Southwest. Named chief portraits from 1907 are especially desirable, combining the documentary significance of an identified historical figure with the artistic excellence of Curtis's finest early work. From a private collection in Tucson, Arizona.
