Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952). "A Zuni Man," an original photogravure printed on vellum paper, from Volume 17 of The North American Indian (1907–1930), Curtis's landmark multi-volume documentation of Native American peoples across the continent. Curtis dedicated over two decades to the project, producing more than 40,000 photographs of some 80 tribal nations. Of the 500 complete sets originally projected, only approximately 300 were completed, making individual volumes and their accompanying plates collectible in their own right. Volume 17 focuses on the Zuni and other Pueblo peoples of the Southwest. The image is presented in a period frame. A strong, well-preserved example of Curtis's work in photogravure, the primary medium through which his images were disseminated during his lifetime.
