Documents Standing Rock during a consequential period in the history of the Northern Plains — one year before Chief Gall's surrender at Fort Buford in January 1881 and six months before Sitting Bull's surrender in July of that year. Standing Rock, situated on the border of present-day North and South Dakota, was home to the Hunkpapa and Sihasapa Lakota as well as the Yanktonai Dakota, and served as the focal point of U.S. government efforts to confine and assimilate the Sioux people during this turbulent era.
