Named portrait of Qunaninru, a King Island subject, by Edward S. Curtis, printed in 1928 on Dutch Van Gelder paper. King Island — known to its Iñupiaq inhabitants as Ugiuvak — rises dramatically from the Bering Sea some 80 miles southwest of Nome, Alaska, and was home to one of the most isolated and culturally distinctive communities in the Arctic world. The King Islanders were celebrated throughout the Arctic for their exceptional seamanship, mastery of ivory carving, and their extraordinary cliff-side village perched on stilts against a near-vertical rock face above the Bering Sea. Named portraits of King Island subjects are among the rarest examples of Curtis's Alaskan work, reflecting both the geographic extremity of the location and the limited number of images he produced there. From a private collection in Tucson, Arizona.
