Material: Photogravure on Dutch Van Gelder paper
Date: 1917
Measurements: Image 11⁷⁄₁₆ × 15⁹⁄₁₆ inches; sheet 17¹⁵⁄₁₆ × 21⁷⁄₈ inches
Provenance: Private collection, Tucson, AZ
Portrait titled Kaviu, Pima by Edward S. Curtis, printed in 1917 on Dutch Van Gelder paper, following Curtis's convention of identifying both subject name and tribal affiliation throughout The North American Indian. The Akimel O'odham, or "River People," had sustained sophisticated irrigation-based communities along the Gila River for centuries, and their assistance to westward-bound emigrants along the southern overland trails was legendary. By the time Curtis documented Kaviu in 1917, their river and much of their traditional agricultural way of life had been effectively appropriated by upstream Anglo settlers and irrigation projects, lending this quietly powerful portrait particular historical resonance. Situated within the broader O'odham homeland, this Tucson provenance carries significant geographic and cultural meaning. From a private collection in Tucson, Arizona.
