Mexico
100 BC - 250 AD
Length 11"
Height 7 1/2" Width 7"
Provenance: Martin Family collection, New York and Florida; Henri L. Schouten, Netherlands and Longboat Key, FL, 1986 - 1994; Old Dutch collection, 1960s.
A rare Colima acrobatic figure showing a male figure planted on all fours in a deep backbend and wearing shell tinklers around the waist. Such effigy figures were likely modeled after actual dancers participating in village ceremonies, though they may also reflect a mythic or ceremonial being. This example is especially notable for its vigorous pose and for its stylistic similarity to a related figure from the Proctor Stafford Collection, now in LACMA. The burnished surface is well preserved, with visible manganese dioxide blooms and an attractive overall patina.
