Mexico
Circa 100 BC - 250 AD
Height 14" Width 8 1/4"
Provenance: Susan Schroeder, Los Angeles, CA; acquired in the 1960s.
A red-orange pottery standing musician holding a rattle in both hands in a forward position. The figure wears a wide-brimmed hat secured with a chin strap, large flared ring leg bracelets, a wide body band, and a loincloth with a large rear panel and three flaps, all decorated with finely incised interlocking diamond textile patterning. Depicted smiling and seemingly in a trance-like state, the figure retains strong surface mineral deposits. Both legs have been reattached with restoration over the break lines, and there is a minor chip on the brim of the hat. A highly detailed and visually striking example of Colima sculpture.
