Material: Copper (approximately 454 grams / 1 lb)
Date: 1756
Measurements: 3½ x 3½ in.
Provenance: Private collection, North Carolina
Note: 19th-century collection label present on reverse
A 1756 Swedish half daler plate money (plåtmynt), struck in copper at the Avesta mint. Swedish plate money was introduced in 1644 during the reign of Queen Christina as a response to Sweden's copper surplus and silver scarcity. Sheets of copper were hammered flat, cut to size, and stamped with five marks — one in each corner and one in the center. The system contributed to the establishment of Stockholms Banco in 1656, the first institution to issue European banknotes. Production ceased in 1776, and the majority of pieces were subsequently melted down; most surviving examples are believed to derive from the 1783 shipwreck of the Nicobar.
The 19th-century collection label on the reverse indicates early collecting history and documents the piece's presence in a 19th-century European or American collection.
